In recent years there has been a resurgence in bamboo-rod fly casting—a return to some of the sport's roots. For split-bamboo fly rods, Headwaters Bamboo Rod Company produces affordable, beautiful bamboo rods for those who want to add a twist to their river and stream casting. Many who try these rods never go back—so you've been warned.
Frank is one of those fishermen who, if there is a fish to be caught in a river, will find it. Consistently. Frustratingly at times. He and his wife maintain a blog about Idaho Falls news. The site covers happenings in Idaho Falls and the surrounding area. Frank, an adventurer to the core, has covered more of Southeast Idaho than most anyone I know, from the smallest streams to mountain-top hot springs. Look around the site for photos of some local streams and campsites. His Idaho Falls site is about Idaho Falls in general, from photos to Idaho Falls restaurants and other items of interest in the area. Oh, and Frank is a web designer and Idaho's top search engine expert SEO.
Rutabagas Idaho Falls Restaurant is a great place to go after a long day of fishing. For an out-of-Idaho meal, you'll enjoy gourmet food at its finest. Plus it's located across from the Idaho Falls Greenbelt where you can enjoy the falls and maybe read a paper and catch up on some Idaho Falls news.
If you are interested, the March 2007 issue of American Angler magazine ran a number of my brown trout illustrations. The article also included some quotations from me. One note: a 20" trout takes about 25 to 30 hours to finish (not 14). Zach Matthews, the author, did an excellent job with the article, and I am grateful that he took an interest in this work and took the time to interview me about these trout, which keep drawing us back to the water, year after year.
Virginia Living will be running an original rainbow trout illustration in its March 2007 issue. This one will be printed at about 14"—so let's hope I added enough detail.
Along the lines of preserving memories, check out JM Histories to learn about one of my other interests: personal histories and collecting and publishing priceless stories and photos (usual old black and white photos from attics, trunks, and so on). There are so many stories and photos worth preserving and sharing.

Why Idaho Falls? Let me pique your interest by offering some geography: The South Fork of the Snake tumbles from Palisades Reservoir up the canyon to the east. Not far north, the Henry's Fork winds through the Island Park area, eventually joining with the South Fork just north and west of Idaho Falls. A little further east, the Teton River snakes through Teton Valley, a beautiful, clear trout stream. I could go on, but then we'd be overrun. |
